Access to Life-Saving Devices: A Crucial Need for Student Athletes

Dr. Kevin J. Mendivil, former superintendent of the Tempe Union High School District, emphasizes the critical importance of accessible Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in ensuring the safety of student-athletes. As a current member of the American Heart Association Phoenix board and Principal of Auxier Elementary, he brings nearly 40 years of educational experience to the discussion.
In the spring of 2023, an AED proved invaluable when a coach collapsed during basketball practice, highlighting the necessity of these devices. This incident reassured Dr. Mendivil and his team, showcasing their preparedness to respond effectively to cardiac emergencies.
Cardiac arrest is alarmingly the leading cause of death among young athletes. Acknowledging this threat, the Tempe Union High School District implemented measures to equip all schools and district programs with AEDs, boosting both security and confidence among families and staff. Quick action is vital; survival rates dramatically increase if a shock is administered within the first minute of an incident.
According to the American Heart Association, only 10% of individuals survive out-of-hospital cardiac arrests, underscoring the importance of immediate action, such as calling 911 and using an AED. With over 23,000 children under 18 experiencing cardiac arrest annually outside a hospital, and 40% of those cases being sports-related, the necessity for prevention strategies is clear. Schools with AEDs see significantly higher survival rates compared to the overall figures.
The Access to AEDs in High School Athletics bill (SB1707) aims to make AEDs more accessible and clearly marked during school hours and athletic events. This proposed legislation aligns with the responsibilities of educational leaders to promote safety for student-athletes.
Dr. Mendivil urges state legislators to support this critical legislation. Ensuring accessible AEDs can be a decisive factor in saving lives during cardiac emergencies, providing peace of mind for families and the community. By implementing these safety measures, Arizona can better protect its student-athletes and promote a culture of health and safety.
Dr. Kevin J. Mendivil’s extensive experience in education and passion for student safety position him as a strong advocate for this lifesaving initiative.
