Abortion Stories Shared on the Campaign Trail: The Fight Continues

Lauren Miller expressed deep concern about the fate of abortion rights as the presidential election approached. Despite her efforts to convey the importance of this issue, she couldn’t shake the fear that her work might not yield the desired outcome on Election Day.
Living in the Dallas area, Miller became a prominent advocate for abortion rights after she testified before Congress following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Her activism took her from national television appearances to a campaign event in Maine for Vice President Kamala Harris. In Texas, she supported U.S. Rep. Colin Allred, a Democrat challenging Republican Senator Ted Cruz.
Her involvement in the fight for abortion rights intensified in March 2023 when she joined other women in suing the state over its abortion ban, known as Zurawski v. Texas. At twelve weeks pregnant with twins, she received devastating news about one fetus’s fatal condition. The subsequent abortion she sought was only accessible by traveling to Colorado. This deeply personal experience motivated Miller and others to share their stories publicly, hoping to influence public perception and political outcomes.
As the 2024 election, the first presidential race post-Roe, unfolded, it placed abortion rights in the spotlight. Harris’s campaign marked a shift towards personal narratives in discussing abortion, something that had been largely absent in political discourse. This strategy aimed to connect with voters on an emotional level, moving away from abstract discussions.
Yet, for many involved, including Miller, sharing such intimate stories extracted a heavy emotional toll. After the November election, which ended with Donald Trump’s victory, Miller reflected on the vulnerability she had shown in her advocacy, only to feel disregarded by segments of the electorate. Trump won key battleground states and has a history of anti-abortion rhetoric, leaving many advocates concerned about the implications for women’s rights.
While Democrats positioned abortion access as a central campaign issue, they ultimately lost ground in both the U.S. Senate and House. Despite the election’s outcome, those who shared their stories on the campaign trail affirmed their commitment to reshape the national conversation about abortion.
One such advocate, Gracie Ladd from Wisconsin, found herself drawn into activism after her personal experience with abortion. Diagnosed with severe fetal anomalies at 20 weeks, Ladd had to travel to Chicago for the procedure. After joining an online support group, she began sharing her story publicly to foster understanding about the realities many face regarding abortion.
Her efforts resonated with others, and despite disappointment over the election results, she feels compelled to continue speaking out. Many states will still grapple with abortion rights post-election, including Wisconsin, where the state Supreme Court is currently deliberating a near-total abortion ban.
Amanda Zurawski, another plaintiff in the Texas case, expressed her grief after the election but emphasized the need to keep pushing forward. She shared her own experience with a life-threatening abortion at public forums, gaining strength from the connections made with others who faced similar challenges.
Dr. Austin Dennard, also a plaintiff in the Texas lawsuit, echoed the sentiment of ongoing advocacy. Despite the election outcome, she remained committed to change, driven by her tragic personal experiences.
Women like Anne Angus from Montana continue to advocate for reproductive rights at the local and state levels. Angus shared her own story of seeking an abortion late in her pregnancy due to severe fetal anomalies. By speaking at legislative sessions, she aimed to counter negative rhetoric surrounding abortion, striving to put a human face to the complex realities that many women face.
Despite setbacks in the elections, advocates remain determined to continue their fight. They believe that sharing personal experiences is crucial to transforming public opinion and policy. As they look ahead, the ongoing challenge of maintaining abortion rights in an increasingly hostile political environment underscores the importance of storytelling in this societal discourse.
