A Minecraft Movie Dominates Box Office with $80.6 Million in Weekend Two

NEW YORK — “A Minecraft Movie” has emerged as the top-grossing Hollywood film of 2025, achieving remarkable box office success shortly after its release. Following a blockbuster opening, ticket sales reached $80.6 million over the weekend, bringing the film’s global total to over $550 million.
Directed by Jared Hess and featuring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, the film debuted with $300 million worldwide. Despite a 50% drop in ticket sales during its second weekend, the continued interest is notable, especially given the criticisms it faced with a 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a “B+” CinemaScore from audiences.
“A Minecraft Movie,” a $150 million production by Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, has revitalized theater attendance, especially after a slow start to the year. Box office revenue is now on par with last year, bolstered by the film’s performance.
New releases struggled to compete against “A Minecraft Movie.” However, Angel Studios’ “The King of Kings” secured second place with $19.1 million. This animated feature tells the life story of Jesus and portrays a star-studded voice cast including Oscar Isaac, Kenneth Branagh, and Uma Thurman. With an “A+” CinemaScore, it’s expected to perform well in the lead-up to Easter.
“The Amateur,” featuring Rami Malek as a CIA cryptographer, debuted with $15 million. Critics had mixed reviews, calling it an awkward vehicle for Malek, who was also a producer on the film. The production budget was $60 million.
Director Alex Garland’s “Warfare” opened to $8.3 million, praised by critics for its realistic portrayal of combat, stemming from a true story about an operation during the Iraq War. The film was produced for approximately $20 million.
Meanwhile, Blumhouse Productions’ thriller “Drop” made $7.5 million. The film, which follows a widow’s terrifying ordeal during a first date, came in under a $10 million production cost.
Final domestic figures are expected to be released Monday, detailing ticket sales from Friday to Sunday across U.S. and Canadian theaters.
