A Decade in the Trenches: The Journey of a Reporter and Their Trusty Boots

Shoe-leather reporting: 10 years on the line & a worn pair of boots

After a decade of dedicated reporting in Southern Arizona, my trusty leather boots, a loyal companion throughout countless stories, have finally reached their end. Backing the Tucson Sentinel’s independent journalism is about more than finances; it’s about investing in the very commitment that shapes local narratives.

This realization struck during an event at Palo Verde High School. As I maneuvered into the area designated for media—a space between the speakers and an eager crowd—my right boot faltered. The sole, worn thin over years of service, completely detached, leaving me in a precarious position trying to salvage the shoe.

A Secret Service agent on duty noticed and inquired about the boots’ history. “Ten years,” I responded, as I awkwardly tried to reassemble the damaged footwear.

These boots have traversed diverse terrains across Southern Arizona, from the Coronado National Forest to the remote stretches of the Barry M. Goldwater bombing range. They bore the elements, enduring mud, wildfires, and even tear gas during significant events. Their journey reflects a decade of local journalism—filled with challenges, triumphs, and a commitment to uncovering the truth.

As I covered press conferences and county meetings, they not only carried my weight but also the responsibility of reporting. Each scratch tells a story; each layer of dust represents a moment spent investigating community concerns. This isn’t a footwear endorsement, but rather a testament to the resources required for thorough reporting.

Dylan Smith, our editor and publisher, emphasizes the Sentinel’s relentless effort since its establishment in 2010 to deliver trustworthy news. “You’ve come to rely on our reporting because no one covers Tucson and Pima politics and border issues with the same persistence and integrity,” he affirmed. This mission, however, demands sustainable support to ensure the continuity of quality journalism.

Independent media outlets like ours face significant hurdles, struggling to secure the necessary resources for both reporting and operational needs. To thrive, we turn to our community. Donations from readers are essential in maintaining our capacity to investigate and inform.

As the community faces increasing challenges and misinformation, robust local journalism becomes more critical than ever. Support from donors amplifies our efforts and can dramatically enhance our reporting capabilities. Contributions during this critical period have the potential to be matched, thereby maximizing the impact on our work.

The Sentinel remains committed to providing comprehensive, accurate reporting. Your support directly bolsters our ability to engage in fearless, in-depth coverage of the issues that matter most to Southern Arizona.
