Labor Day of love: Small business owners happy to work holiday weekend

As Labor Day Weekend approaches, a variety of self-employed business owners prepare for an influx of visitors. While many enjoy a break, for these entrepreneurs, this weekend represents an important opportunity for revenue.

Local business owners, including those running rental services, food trucks, and gift shops, eagerly anticipate the holiday. Steve Rangoussis, who operates Stoney’s Grill food truck, highlights the significance of the weekend. “This is the last hurrah for summer,” he explains, emphasizing the economic benefits that such holiday weekends bring to the community.

With tourists flocking to the area, Rangoussis meets the needs of hungry boaters. “I usually park at Kokomo’s,” he shares, adding that he often delivers water to dehydrated customers enjoying their time on the water. He observes that those visiting from out of state frequently overlook the importance of hydration amid their focus on alcohol consumption.

Despite the long hours, Rangoussis enjoys working on holiday weekends. “We get to cater to the community and meet the needs of people from all over,” he states, appreciating the chance to serve both locals and visitors.

Tricia Chrzanowski, co-owner of the Big Orange Boat, shares a similar sentiment. While she remains uncertain about the specific outcomes of Labor Day Weekend, she prepares for a busy day. Her philosophy is simple: show up ready to work and maintain a positive attitude. Though she occasionally wishes for time on her own boat, Chrzanowski enjoys the lake atmosphere and customer interactions.

Labor Day Weekend might mark the end of the main boating season for them, but Chrzanowski acknowledges the joy that comes from their work. “It becomes a part of your life during summer,” she remarks, accepting the seasonal demands with enthusiasm.

Chris Patterson, owner of Wet Monkey Rentals, expects a busy weekend but notes it’s typically less hectic than Memorial Day. “It’s the last hurrah for rentals,” he says. While the weekend looks promising based on reservations, Patterson recognizes the shift that follows as the boating season winds down.

As small businesses prepare for a bustling Labor Day Weekend, they embody the spirit of hard work and dedication that defines the community. Whether serving food or providing rentals, these entrepreneurs contribute to a vibrant local economy.
