Tucson Comic Con Celebrates 15 Years of Fandom this Labor Day Weekend
Tucson Comic-Con marks its 15th anniversary this weekend, welcoming a vibrant array of local artists, vendors, and special guests including Marvel Comics writer and editor Roy Thomas, alongside actor Doug Jones, renowned for his performances in “Pan’s Labyrinth,” “What We Do In The Shadows,” “Star Trek: Discovery,” and “The Shape of Water.”
Originally launched as a one-day event in 2008, Tucson Comic-Con has grown into a three-day convention expected to draw over 10,000 attendees. Participants can explore more than 40 guests and engage with over 100 exhibitor booths showcasing diverse offerings.
The convention offers a variety of programs, including gaming sessions, themed arts and crafts, panels, family activities, workshops, and exciting costume contests. Attendees will also find three scavenger hunts, a designated quiet zone, and a photo booth for memorable snapshots.
Local artist Rudy Flores, co-owner of Hex and Hew, a sticker production company, is among the featured guests. He is involved in the Army Man Project, which uses 3D scanning technology to create toy figurines that capture the essence of participants. Currently, 172 figurines are part of the “Tiny Tributes” permanent installation at the Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures.
“Tiny Tributes is dedicated to Tucsonans and their daily lives,” Flores stated. “We want to promote the project at the Comic-Con and encourage participation. Everyone involved receives a figurine, with a second copy donated to the museum.”
In addition to his participation in the convention, Flores is developing a graphic novel titled “Mosca Roja,” which he considers his long-term endeavor. He also illustrated the covers for the Little Tucson Book Series.
Tucson Comic-Con is a family affair for Flores, who plans to attend with his wife and children. “One of my kids is six, and he drew Godzilla at school. We made stickers of his drawing, and he’s so excited,” he shared.
Flores’ booth will be located in Artist Alley, AA096. Notably, the winner of the costume contest will receive a figurine, with an additional copy added to the Tiny Tributes collection at the Mini Time Machine Museum.
Admission prices for Tucson Comic-Con vary depending on the ticket type. The event takes place from Friday, Aug. 30, to Sunday, Sept. 1, at the Tucson Convention Center, located at 260 S. Church Ave.
