Travel Tips for Sonora, Mexico: Navigating Safety After Arizona Sisters’ Shooting
PHOENIX — In the wake of tragic events involving two elderly sisters from Arizona, experts assure travelers that popular destinations like Rocky Point remain safe. The sisters, aged 72 and 82, were brutally attacked while traveling to Caborca from Sonoyta. Their vehicle was discovered overturned and shot up, prompting concerns about safety in the region.
Authorities recovered a stolen truck loaded with firearms that is believed to be linked to the incident, yet the responsible group has not been apprehended. María Fernanda Arreguin, the Consulate for the Protection of Mexican Nationals in Phoenix, expressed her sorrow over the attack, emphasizing that such violence is unexpected in either nation.
Amid these concerns, Arreguin provided travel guidance for those planning to visit Sonora, especially for the holiday weekend. She highlighted practical measures to enhance safety, such as beginning your journey early in the day, stopping only in populated areas, ensuring the vehicle is in good repair, and checking real-time conditions through the Heroes Paisanos app.
“While there are issues to address, it’s crucial to recognize the many positive aspects of travel in Mexico,” noted Arreguin. Despite a U.S. Department of State warning advising against travel to Sonora, she assured visitors that local and federal governments are actively working to improve security throughout Mexico.
Mike Jarvinen, who runs a shuttle service to Rocky Point with his wife, shared his experiences of traveling there. He highlighted that his wife frequently visits this destination without incident and encourages travelers to be cautious and respectful. “The police and fire departments are very helpful,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of following local laws.
As travelers prepare for the holiday weekend, seeking out reliable information and adhering to safety tips can make for a more secure journey. Despite underlying concerns, the allure of Mexico’s beaches still draws many, supported by community efforts to provide safe travel options.
