A man was selling elotes in Phoenix when he was hit by a stray bullet, hospitalized

PHOENIX — A local food vendor, 32-year-old Raul Domínguez, remains hospitalized after being injured by a stray bullet while selling elotes on Saturday evening. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. near Sunridge Park, close to 62nd Avenue and Roosevelt Street.

Details from Phoenix police indicate that the bullet hit Domínguez in the lung. His sister, Amalia Domínguez, conveyed that authorities informed the family the shot was fired from a considerable distance and was not aimed at her brother. “It wasn’t meant for him. He was not the target,” Amalia stated, emphasizing that it was simply a stray bullet.

Luckily, neighbors acted swiftly, calling an ambulance for Raul after the shooting. Amalia expressed her concerns, noting the increasing gun violence in the community. “This could have happened to anyone,” she remarked, highlighting the fear that residents are experiencing.

According to Amalia, Raul is currently in stable condition and has been able to recount the surprising details of the incident. “He said that he didn’t see anything; he was just working and it caught him by surprise,” she shared. He described a near-death experience, motivated to survive for the sake of his four daughters, three of whom have special needs.

This incident adds pressure to the family, as Raul is the sole provider. “Diapers, milk, rent, he did it all,” Amalia conveyed, outlining the challenges they now face.

Authorities are actively investigating the case. Phoenix police encourage anyone with information about the incident to report it anonymously at 1-800-343-TIPS or 480-(TESTIGO).
