Residents fight back: Personal stories fuel rate hike appeal

Over 3,000 residents of Lake Havasu City have signed petitions this month, protesting surging summer electric bills following recent rate hikes by UniSource Energy Services (UES). The situation has prompted discussions about a potential investigation by the Arizona Attorney General’s Office.

Leading the charge is retiree Nanci Dickey, who has rallied her neighbors against these rate increases, including a 12% rise effective February 1 and a 9% surcharge added last May. On August 13, Dickey organized meetings at the Mohave County Library to gather signatures and share experiences with other residents. She reports that interest in the petition has increased, rallying more citizens to the cause.

“We’ve seen more outrage and more signatures,” said Dickey. Local businesses and members of the City Council have also joined the protest. Petitions are available at various locations, including Inspire the Church and automotive shops across town.

Customers have been encouraged to submit copies of their July electric bills to substantiate their claims against UES. “On Friday, we’ll send everything to the AG’s office,” Dickey confirmed. “They say it’ll take five to seven days to review, and we should hear back in two weeks.”

The rising electricity costs have hit especially hard for the older population in Havasu. According to local demographic studies, retirees comprise approximately 54% of the city’s 53,000 residents. Garry Daren, another retiree, voiced his frustration after seeing his July bill spike to nearly $500, despite using less energy.

“I typically pay around $325. This month was shocking,” he said. “I live on a fixed income from 1994, and inflation has not made things easier.”

Michelle Debellis, a long-time resident, echoed similar sentiments. Despite her thermostat setting at 84 degrees throughout the summer, her bill skyrocketed from $120 to $260. The inconsistencies in billing have left many residents questioning their service.

Ruby Pippin, who joined the petition efforts recently, encouraged community members to spread the word. She noted the apparent collective frustration among residents, particularly those relying on fixed incomes. “Everyone is talking about their bills on social media. It’s hard to understand how the costs can fluctuate so dramatically,” Pippin said.

In response to the growing unrest, UniSource has engaged with Arizona Sen. Sonny Borrelli to address consumer complaints about summer rates. Company representative Joseph Barrios emphasized their commitment to assisting affected customers. “If anyone believes there’s an issue with their bill, we encourage them to reach out. We’re here to help and answer any questions,” he noted.

As residents await a resolution, the petition movement highlights a broader concern over utility costs in Lake Havasu City. Many hope their unified voice can lead to necessary changes or at least accountability for their rising bills.
