Lake Havasu's Site Six could receive $1.6 million in improvements

Lake Havasu’s Site Six fishing pier, a cherished spot for local anglers and tourists alike for over 26 years, may soon undergo significant changes. Mohave County Supervisor Buster Johnson reported that the pier, frequented by tens of thousands of visitors annually, is showing signs of wear and tear, prompting a proposal for a comprehensive replacement.

Johnson is advocating for a $1.6 million investment, utilizing funds from the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act, to replace the aging structure. In his proposal presented to the county’s governing board, he emphasized the pier’s value as a family-friendly fishing venue, ideal for those without boats.

Regrettably, the current condition of the pier has raised safety concerns. “The fishing pier needs replacement,” Johnson stated. He pointed out issues such as rusting guard railings, compromised supports, and dilapidated floats, stressing that renovation costs were only $200,000 less than total replacement expenses, making a new build a more logical choice in the long run.

The anticipated project includes the complete removal of the existing facility to accommodate a new marina at Site Six. Local resident Maggie Russell, an avid fisher who frequents the pier, voiced her support for the initiative. She described the pier as a popular recommendation for visitors seeking good fishing spots.

“I usually go once or twice a month, and it’s a go-to location for customers at Bass Tackle Master,” Russell noted. However, she highlighted the need for improved lighting and structural reinforcements, citing concerns about submerged cables that often snag fishing lines.

The funding from the American Rescue Plan Act will cover the engineering, design, permitting, and construction costs associated with the replacement. The Mohave County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to discuss this vital project and potentially cast a vote during their upcoming meeting on August 19 in Kingman.
