Phx Native Walker Lands Prestigious Role at Eastern Michigan University

Eastern Michigan University (EMU) has appointed Andy Walker as the new head coach of its men’s golf program, according to Athletic Director Scott Wetherbee. This announcement follows a significant $6.5 million commitment from GameAbove aimed at enhancing EMU Golf.
Walker, a Phoenix native and a four-time national champion, brings with him a wealth of experience. His prior head coaching roles include positions at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Lynn University, and South Mountain Community College (SMCC). As a player, he was instrumental in Pepperdine University’s 1997 NCAA National Championship victory and later enjoyed an 11-year professional golf career. Walker graduated from Pepperdine in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science in business administration and was honored with induction into the Pepperdine Sports Hall of Fame.
In his most recent role at VCU, Walker led the men’s golf team from a national ranking of No. 187 to a top-40 status within two and a half seasons. His tenure was marked by remarkable player development and a strong recruiting strategy, resulting in several record-breaking team performances. Notably, his players achieved seven Atlantic 10 Conference selections, including two Rookies of the Year, one Player of the Year, and four Academic All-Americans.
Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, Walker stated, “Life is about opportunity and taking advantage of it. Eastern Golf is in a unique transformative phase, with support from EMU and GameAbove, providing the best resources not only in the MAC but across the entire NCAA. I’m honored to lead the Eagles and excited about our mission to pursue a National Championship.”
