Toddler rescued from hot, locked car in Homestead

On the morning of August 15, 2024, emergency teams from Maricopa successfully rescued a toddler trapped in a locked vehicle within the Homestead gated community. The temperature reached a sweltering 99 degrees when the incident occurred.

According to Phoenix Regional Dispatch, responders received a call at 9:47 a.m. to assist in extracting the child, who was inside a Ford Explorer. Firefighters from Ladder Tender 571 quickly devised a plan to unlock the vehicle by inserting a cable through the driver’s side door.

The extraction effort proved successful, as both the toddler and his mother were relieved following the ordeal. The police were prepared to break a window if the lockout tools did not yield results quickly, Maricopa Police Corporal Cory Benoit noted. “You can fix a window easy, but it’s hard to take care of a child that goes down on heat exhaustion,” he emphasized.

Statistics underline the urgency of such rescues, with children’s bodies warming three to five times faster than adults’, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In response to rising concerns about child safety in vehicles, the NHTSA offered crucial guidance for parents and caregivers.

They advise never leaving children unattended in cars, regardless of internal conditions. Moreover, caregivers should develop the habit of thoroughly checking the back seat before locking the vehicle. A reminder strategy could involve placing personal items in the back seat to initiate a double-check. Caregivers are also encouraged to inform childcare providers to alert them if a child does not arrive as scheduled.

Everyone is reminded to secure vehicles at all times. Even if no children are present, it’s important to prevent local children from gaining access to unlocked cars. Immediate action is critical if one encounters a child alone in a locked vehicle; calling 911 is the first step to ensure the child’s safety.
