👍👎 How they voted: City Council meeting, Aug. 13, 2024

New Density and Height Regulations Approved

In a recent council meeting, significant changes to zoning codes were enacted, with a vote tally of 5-2 in favor of maximum density adjustments. Under these new regulations, the allowable maximum density in R-3 (Limited Multiple-Family District) zones will now permit between four to sixteen units, increasing from a previous cap of four to ten units. This decision aims to facilitate higher housing density in designated areas.

Simultaneously, the council addressed height limitations. With another 5-2 vote, the maximum height for developments adjacent to single and two-family homes in the Southgate District will rise from 18 feet to 30 feet. This revision is intended to accommodate taller structures in a manner that balances community needs and urban development.

Additionally, the council unanimously voted 7-0 to amend city regulations regarding backyard fowl. The revised code permits backyard chickens in single-family residential districts, contingent upon specific regulations. This policy change aligns with an impending state law, effective this September, which prohibits cities from banning backyard fowl altogether.
