Diamondbacks Seize Victory with Thrilling Comeback: 5-4 Win Over Rockies Fueled by Wild Pitches
PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks edged past the Colorado Rockies 5-4, thanks to a dramatic seventh inning on Monday night. Corbin Carroll and Kevin Newman both scored on back-to-back wild pitches, marking the D-backs’ fourth consecutive victory.
The team has accumulated an impressive 18-5 record since the All-Star break, demonstrating strong performance in recent games.
With Arizona trailing 4-3 in the seventh, Joc Pederson found himself at the plate with two outs and runners on first and third. However, he never had to swing as the Wild Pitches from Tyler Kinley allowed Carroll to score easily. Newman, benefiting from a stolen base, advanced to third base.
Following the first wild pitch, Kinley threw another errant ball that catcher Elias Díaz couldn’t handle, allowing Newman to sprint home and slide in for the lead.
Jake McCarthy contributed with two hits and two RBIs, while both Newman and Josh Bell added two hits each. Closer Justin Martinez secured the win, overcoming a leadoff single in the ninth for his third save.
Brandon Pfaadt (7-6) shone on the mound for Arizona, tying a career-high with 11 strikeouts in seven innings, despite allowing four runs and eight hits.
Colorado’s Bradley Blalock made his team debut, yielding three runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings. This marked just his second appearance in the major leagues, where he struck out four batters.
In the sixth inning, the Rockies extended their lead to 4-1 following Brendan Rodgers’ solo home run. However, the D-backs quickly responded with runs from Bell and McCarthy to tighten the score to 4-3.
Arizona initially got on the scoreboard in the second inning, thanks to McCarthy’s RBI double, but Colorado answered in the third with an RBI single from Díaz. Jake Cave notably recorded three hits for the Rockies, while Anthony Molina (1-1) took the loss after allowing two runs in one inning of relief.
In the trainer’s room, Rockies’ Blalock was called up from Double-A Hartford, while Kris Bryant was placed on the 10-day IL due to a back strain. On the other hand, Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte initially started following an ankle contusion but departed after his first at-bat due to renewed pain.
Looking ahead, the Diamondbacks will see LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (1-0, 4.76 ERA) make his second start of the season on Tuesday night, while LHP Austin Gomber (3-8, 4.92 ERA) will pitch for the Rockies.
Arizona remains a vibrant hub for sports, with teams across multiple major leagues including the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals and NBA’s Phoenix Suns. The city also hosts significant sporting events throughout the year, reinforcing its strong sports culture.
