Money Saving Monday: How teachers can save on classroom supplies

As the new school year approaches, teachers are exploring effective ways to reduce their expenses on supplies. With rising costs, finding budget-friendly options is becoming increasingly important.

In recent years, the National Education Association reports that over 90% of teachers have dipped into their own pockets for classroom materials. The financial burden varies, depending on grade levels taught and individual needs.

Kattiana Perez, who homeschools her child, reflects on the escalating costs. “It can be really expensive,” she stated, estimating her annual spending could range from $1,500 to $2,000, contributing to the continuous cycle of purchasing educational materials.

School supplies, including crayons and pencils, have seen price increases of nearly 18% annually. This adds to the stressful climate for educators who often spend hundreds of dollars yearly on necessary items.

Joy Klein, the executive director of Treasures 4 Teachers in Tempe, highlighted the organization’s mission to alleviate some of these costs. “We allow for a shopping experience for teachers of free and low-cost items,” she explained. Donations from local individuals and teachers themselves support their efforts.

Perez has discovered significant savings through this initiative, securing both new and gently used items. “You can find not just basic supplies but also books and other engaging materials,” she noted, emphasizing the value in extending the classroom experience.

The organization’s $5 Fill-a-Bag section has gained popularity among educators. Klein encourages teachers to seek additional savings through local thrift stores, social media platforms like Facebook Marketplace, and community offerings.

As this school year commences, teachers are urged to explore diverse avenues for cutting costs. The combination of local resources and community support plays a crucial role in empowering educators.
