Unmasking Kamala Harris’ Statements on Donald Trump at Arizona Rally: Fact-Checkers Dive In
PHOENIX — Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, addressed a vibrant crowd in Glendale, near Phoenix, on Friday evening.
During her speech, Harris made several claims about former President Donald Trump, which 12News meticulously fact-checked.
CLAIM:
Harris asserted that Trump plans to dismantle the Affordable Care Act (ACA) if he secures another term.
“If Donald Trump wins in November, he intends to end the Affordable Care Act and take us back to a time when insurance companies can deny people with pre-existing conditions,” stated Harris at the rally.
THE ANSWER:
Former President Trump did express intentions to revisit the ACA fight in November 2023. He mentioned considering “seriously” looking at alternatives if he wins a second term, following a failed repeal attempt during his previous administration.
CLAIM:
Harris mentioned that a bipartisan border security bill failed due to Trump’s actions.
“Earlier this year, we had a chance to pass the toughest bipartisan border security bill in decades,” Harris claimed. “But Donald Trump tanked the deal.”
THE ANSWER:
This statement is misleading. While Trump claimed credit for the deal’s failure, he did not have a vote in Congress nor was he the head of the Republican party at that time. The actual decision lay with those who voted against the bill.
CLAIM:
Harris suggested that Trump plans to cut Social Security while giving tax breaks to billionaires and corporations.
“Donald Trump intends to give a tax break to billionaires and big corporations,” Harris alleged. “He intends to cut Social Security and Medicare.”
THE ANSWER:
This is nuanced. Trump has not specified cuts to Social Security benefits directly but proposes cutting Social Security taxes. Experts believe that reducing taxes could hasten the program’s insolvency since taxes fund it.
CLAIM:
Harris stated that Trump called for the termination of the U.S. Constitution.
THE ANSWER:
This is accurate. In a post on Truth Social, Trump argued that supposed fraud in the 2020 election justified the termination of constitutional rules and articles. This claim about election fraud, however, has been debunked.
