University of Arizona appoints new president

The Arizona Board of Regents announced Friday that Dr. Suresh Garimella has been appointed as the 23rd president of the University of Arizona.

Garimella currently serves as the 27th president of the University of Vermont. He previously held the position of Executive Vice President for Research and Partnerships at Purdue University. His appointment was met with unanimous approval from the board.

“I am honored to be chosen by the board as the next president of the University of Arizona,” said Garimella. “I have long admired the U of A and its stature in the state of Arizona and far beyond.”

Garimella added that he sees the University of Arizona as demonstrating the best qualities of a land-grant university, with exceptional leadership in research and health sciences, highly acclaimed faculty and staff, and a diverse student population. He looks forward to collaborating with university stakeholders to build on its strengths and lead in excellence both locally and globally.

Details about Garimella’s start date and contract negotiations are still being finalized.

His appointment follows the resignation of former President Robert Robbins, who stepped down in early April amid a $177 million budget shortfall. Robbins will continue his role until Garimella’s tenure begins, likely in late fall.
