How Team USA’s Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone Dominated the 400-Meter Hurdles Final
PARIS, France — In a thrilling finale at the Stade de France, Team USA’s Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone secured her third Olympic gold medal in the women’s 400-meter hurdles.
The 25-year-old American not only defended her title from the 2020 Tokyo Games but also shattered her own world record. She crossed the line in 50.65 seconds, leaving her competitors in the dust.
Facing a formidable challenge from Dutch rival Femke Bol, McLaughlin-Levrone held her nerve. Bol, the reigning world champion, had already bagged a gold medal in the 4×400-meter mixed relay for the Netherlands, making this match-up even more anticipated.
McLaughlin-Levrone led from the start, maintaining a steady pace and a strong finish. Her record-breaking performance has now seen her lower the world mark six times since she first claimed it in 2021.
American teammate Anna Cockrell finished second, 1.50 seconds behind McLaughlin-Levrone, while Bol completed the race in third, making it a podium finish that highlighted the intense competition.
“Iron sharpens iron,” McLaughlin-Levrone remarked earlier this week, acknowledging the high level of competition she faced. “It’s always fun racing the best, and I know we’re going to push each other.”
This was one of the most anticipated races at the Paris Olympics, and it did not disappoint. Both McLaughlin-Levrone and Bol had excelled in their semifinal heats, setting the stage for an electrifying final.
