Arizona Politicians Stir the Pot Over Gov. Tim Walz’s VP Bid

By Matthew Holloway
Arizona politicians have offered mixed reactions following the announcement that Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will join Vice President Kamala Harris in her 2024 presidential campaign. Harris, named the Democratic nominee through an unconventional process bypassing the primary election, revealed her selection of Walz as the Vice Presidential nominee ahead of the ceremonial Democratic Convention. Democratic leaders appear largely unified in support, while Republicans voice strong opposition.
Governor Katie Hobbs expressed her excitement, praising Walz’s dedication. “I’ve worked with him directly on many issues and have seen his commitment to the American people. Governors understand the needs of their states, and I trust that Walz and Harris will deliver for Arizona,” Hobbs told reporters.
In a deviation from her usual demeanor, Hobbs enthusiastically commented on Walz’s selection, saying, “Oh my gosh, you should have been in my house when I saw the news. I’m absolutely thrilled that Vice President Harris has chosen him.”
Senator Mark Kelly, once a rival for the vice-presidential nomination, voiced his support on X. “Vice President @KamalaHarris and Governor @Tim_Walz are working to unite our country. @GabbyGiffords and I will do everything to help them win,” he wrote.
Democrat Congressman Ruben Gallego highlighted Walz’s military background, despite criticisms about his early retirement. “Walz served for 24 years as a National Guardsman. He’s committed to working for our kids, veterans, and future. He will serve our country well,” Gallego wrote.
Arizona Democratic Party Chairwoman Yolanda Bejarano expressed confidence in the Harris-Walz ticket, citing their strong record on critical issues such as abortion rights, support for working families, and democracy protection.
Conversely, Arizona Republicans are alarmed by Walz’s nomination, focusing on his response to the 2020 BLM riots in Minneapolis and his progressive policies. Republican Senate nominee Kari Lake posted images of Minneapolis in turmoil, accusing Walz of encouraging the unrest.
Congressman Andy Biggs echoed similar concerns, stating, “Tim Walz let his state burn, and Kamala raised money to bail these criminals out of jail. This is the America the radical Left desires.”
Representative Eli Crane referenced accusations of stolen valor against Walz, emphasizing a New York Post article and a letter by retired Command Sergeants Major Behrends and Herr alleging Walz abandoned his battalion in 2005.
The Arizona GOP criticized Walz’s record on X, listing his support for sanctuary cities, universal health care, and higher taxes, while denouncing his stance on voter ID laws and fossil fuels. They concluded, “Tim Walz is dangerous for America. We cannot let the Harris-Walz ticket’s far-left policies ruin our country.”
