Arizona Stars to Watch on Day 10 of the 2024 Paris Olympics – August 5
The second and final full week of the 2024 Summer Olympics commences in Paris, with multiple Arizona athletes gearing up for competition on Monday.
PARIS, France — The Games continue in Paris as we dive into the second full week of the 2024 Summer Olympics.
The initial nine days delivered thrilling performances and a haul of medals by Arizona athletes. Swimmers Léon Marchand, Regan Smith, and archer Brady Ellison—each clinched bronze, gold, and silver medals, respectively, on Sunday.
Arizona’s athletes will fight for more glory on Monday. Here is who will be competing and the schedule (all times are Arizona time):
3×3 Basketball
Women’s Semifinals: USA vs. Spain, 8:30 a.m. Former Phoenix Mercury forward Cierra Burdick represents Team USA. If they win, they advance to the gold medal game at 1 p.m. If they lose, they play for bronze at noon.
Beach Volleyball
Men’s Round of 16: Chase Budinger, who played basketball for the University of Arizona and the Phoenix Suns, along with his partner Miles Evans, face Norway’s Anders Berntsen Mol and Christian Sandlie Soerum at 5 a.m. A loss ends their Olympics; a win moves them to the quarterfinals on August 7.
Diving
Women’s 10-meter platform: Delaney Schnell, a former University of Arizona diver residing in Tucson, competes in preliminary dives beginning at 1 a.m. The top 18 advance to the semifinals at 6 a.m., with the final scheduled for 6 a.m. on Tuesday.
Track and Field
Men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase: US runner Matthew Wilkinson trains with Under Armour Mission Run Dark Sky Distance in Flagstaff. He will race in Heat 2. Heats begin at 10:04 a.m., with the top five in each heat advancing to the final on August 7 at 12:43 p.m.
As the first nine days of the Olympics wrap up, several events have concluded: Archery, BMX Freestyle, BMX Racing, Mountain Bike, Road Cycling, Fencing, Judo, Rowing, Rugby Sevens, Swimming, Tennis, Trampoline Gymnastics.
Monday marks the final competitions for: Artistic Gymnastics, 3×3 Basketball, Badminton, Canoe Slalom, Triathlon, Surfing, and Shooting.
Debuting Monday are: Artistic Swimming, Track Cycling, Sport Climbing, and Wrestling.
Yet to begin are: Breaking (August 9), Canoe Sprint (August 8), Marathon Swimming (August 7), Modern Pentathlon (August 8), Rhythmic Gymnastics (August 8), Taekwondo (August 7), and Weightlifting (August 7).
Arizona sports
Phoenix hosts four major sports teams: NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, NBA’s Phoenix Suns, WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, and MLB’s Arizona Diamondbacks. The Cardinals play at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, while the Suns and Mercury play at the Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix. The Indoor Football League’s Arizona Rattlers compete at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale. Phoenix Rising FC, a USL soccer team, plays at Phoenix Rising FC Stadium in Phoenix.
The Valley is home to major sporting events, including the Fiesta Bowl, Guaranteed Rate Bowl, WM Phoenix Open, NASCAR’s Championship Weekend, and Cactus League Spring Training for 15 MLB teams.
