Arizona athletes to watch in the Paris Olympics on Monday, August 5


The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris enters its second and final full week of competition, and Monday promises to be an eventful day for Arizona athletes.

PARIS, France — With the conclusion of the first nine days of the Games, Arizona athletes have already made their mark with multiple medal wins. On Sunday, swimmers Léon Marchand secured a bronze, Regan Smith claimed gold, and archer Brady Ellison earned silver, adding to their impressive collections.

Monday presents another opportunity for Arizona athletes to shine. Here are the details on who to watch and when (all times in Arizona time):

3×3 Basketball
Women’s Semifinals
USA vs. Spain, 8:30 a.m.
Former Phoenix Mercury forward Cierra Burdick will compete for Team USA.
A win for Team USA will see them in the gold medal game at 1 p.m. against either Germany or Canada. If they lose, the bronze medal game is at noon.

Beach Volleyball
Men’s Round of 16
Chase Budinger, former University of Arizona basketball player and Phoenix Sun, will team with Miles Evans against Norway’s Anders Berntsen Mol and Christian Sandlie Soerum at 5 a.m.
A loss will conclude their Olympic journey, while a win advances them to the quarterfinals on August 7.

Diving
Women’s 10-meter platform
Delaney Schnell, former University of Arizona diver, will compete in preliminary dives starting at 1 a.m.
The top 18 divers will move to the semifinals at 6 a.m., with the final scheduled for 6 a.m. on Tuesday.

Track and Field
Men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase
US runner Matthew Wilkinson, who trains with Under Armour Mission Run Dark Sky Distance in Flagstaff, will race in Heat 2.
Heats begin at 10:04 a.m. The top five runners from each of the three heats will proceed to the final on August 7 at 12:43 p.m.

As the first nine days of the Olympics wrap up, some events have concluded:

  • Weightlifting (starts Aug. 7)

In Arizona sports, Phoenix is home to four major professional teams: the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, NBA’s Phoenix Suns, WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, and MLB’s Arizona Diamondbacks. The Cardinals play at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, while the Suns and Mercury share the Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix.

The Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League play at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale. Phoenix Rising FC, a USL soccer team, competes at Phoenix Rising FC Stadium.

The Valley hosts numerous major sporting events annually, including college football’s Fiesta Bowl and Guaranteed Rate Bowl, the WM Phoenix Open, NASCAR events, and Cactus League Spring Training for 15 MLB teams.
