Community Unites to Revitalize Vandalized Diversity Mural in Valley
A group called the Beautify the Valley Squad created the artwork to spread a message of kindness and represent the different cultures in the community.
PHOENIX — A mural designed to spread kindness and highlight Valley diversity was defaced this week.
The artists involved remain unaware of the identity of the vandals, but the community was swift in its response to restore the damaged artwork.
At the intersection of 39th and Missouri Avenues in Phoenix, Valley art teacher Candace Greene and artist Lalo Cota united kids and families a few years ago to craft a mural in the Sevilla West community. It’s one of several walls they’ve transformed with their art.
“This is the wall that kids walk past every day, both in the morning and after school,” Greene said. “It’s a powerful reminder for them to practice kindness on their way to school.”
The Beautify the Valley Squad, the collective behind the mural, aims to spread messages of kindness and celebrate the community’s diverse cultures.
“It brings joy to the community,” Greene emphasized.
However, they were recently shocked to learn that someone had vandalized the wall.
“I don’t understand those types of people,” remarked Katelynn Coleman, one of the original artists. “There’s no reason to ruin someone else’s art.”
“It made me upset,” Greene added. “It really breaks my heart.”
The community didn’t hesitate to come together to restore the mural to its original state.
“We cleaned up the wall early in the morning after someone defaced it,” said Emiliano Carbajal, one of the numerous volunteers. “It feels disrespectful, especially since the mural promotes kindness.”
After about an hour of cleaning, there was a sense of relief among the helpers.
“It looks so much better,” said Coleman. “I’m just glad we didn’t let the vandalism remain.”
This incident hasn’t deterred the Beautify the Valley Squad’s mission. In fact, it’s just the beginning.
“Some squad members are planning a trip to France and Italy next summer,” Greene revealed. “We’re excited about the opportunity to create a mural abroad.”
Greene left a poignant message for those responsible for the vandalism.
“Positivity and kindness will always overcome hate,” she proclaimed.
