MCT returns to West Sedona School

On Saturday, July 27, the West Sedona School auditorium transformed into a maritime adventure as Sedona’s youth performed in the Missoula Children’s Theatre’s musical adaptation of “Treasure Island.” This annual event, involving 50 children aged five to 18, is the result of a collaboration between the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT), the Rotary Club of Sedona Village, Sedona Public Library, and the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.

The week-long theatre camp kicked off with auditions on Monday. Throughout the week, participants rehearsed daily, culminating in a polished performance on Saturday. “We teach it in building blocks,” MCT Director Lindsay Williams explained. From learning lines to incorporating movement and finally adding costumes and props, the process helps young actors gradually build their skills.

Williams emphasized the importance of summer programs, noting, “They give kids a chance to get these learning opportunities not just during the school year. It builds confidence.” This year’s production drew numerous first-timers as well as returning young actors.

Oscar Jaimez, an MCT tour actor and co-director, played Long John Silver while mentoring the kids. Jaimez highlighted the joy of seeing children like Levi Kraut, who boldly delivered his lines with enthusiasm. Kraut has previously participated in MCT projects, showcasing his growth as an actor.

Among the cast, notable performances included Mason Perrine as Jim Hawkins, Elaine Perrine as Mother Hawkins, and a host of others who brought the tale’s characters to life. The Pirates, played by young talents such as Ethan Perrine, Matthew Rodriguez, and Lillian Bivanco, added a thrilling dimension to the show.

The performance saw characters like the Gulls and Mariners, played by children aged six and up, bringing vivid energy to the stage. Newcomers like Carter Rowland and six-year-old Cameron Gidell experienced their first foray into acting, with Rowland balancing his new hobby with a passion for sports.

Returning performer Leeloo Cordova, who played Sapphire, shared her enthusiasm for acting despite the challenges of memorizing her lines, noting that she enjoyed the stage more than dancing in local talent shows.

The annual Missoula Children’s Theatre camp in Sedona continues to foster young talent, creating a blend of education, excitement, and community engagement. Each summer, it becomes a beacon of creativity, and this year’s “Treasure Island” performance was no exception.

As the curtain closed on the production, it was clear that the combined efforts of organizers, parents, and the energetic young performers had created another unforgettable experience for the Sedona community.
