The secret to aging well in Sun City: Social bonds, exercise and pom poms

As the Sun City Poms celebrate their 45th anniversary, they emphasize the significance of staying active and social for healthy aging.

SUN CITY, Ariz. — When 83-year-old Peggy Parsons fell and fractured her back in February, it could have marked a steep decline in her health.

But recently, she was back on her feet, marching with her teammates, pom poms in hand.

“They’ve been so supportive. I can’t talk even about this,” Parsons said emotionally after a team practice.

The Sun City Poms’ 45-year legacy demonstrates how crucial an active and social lifestyle is for aging well. A Harvard study on aging supports this, showing that these habits improve happiness and physical resilience.

In an interview with 12News, the Sun City Poms and Sun City West Jazzy Poms discussed their unique bond. Both squads, from northwest Valley suburbs, jokingly dismiss the notion of being “pom rivals.”

“We could have a dance-off! Just like West Side Story!” one member joked, highlighting their camaraderie. They take pride in their histories and tackle aging with energy and solidarity.

“You can be anything you want to be. This is a time for re-invention,” said Diana Lamb, 74, of the Sun City Poms. “You don’t have to be the person you were when you were 30, 40, or 50.”

Research indicates that complex exercises like dance enhance brain function more than simple activities like walking.

“If you’re not using your body, your body isn’t happy. And if your body isn’t happy, nothing else is happy,” said Jan of the Jazzy Poms.

Terry, once a college cheerleader, eagerly donned the Sun City West Jazzy Pom uniform. “I got to wear glitter, finally. That was my favorite part,” Terry said.

Since the Sun City Poms’ inception in 1979, similar groups have emerged in retirement communities nationwide.

“It’s the greatest group of women I’ve ever met,” said Marcy of the Sun City Poms. “When I’m on vacation and get back, it’s like we’ve been away from our best friends forever.”

Both groups perform at various events, including high school assemblies, parades, and community centers. While the Sun City Poms practice year-round without boundary restrictions, the Sun City West Jazzy Poms require members to live within Sun City West and belong to the DanceSensations Club.

“Being in my 80s now, I feel something new every morning,” said Marian, 83, the oldest Jazzy Pom. “But you just get up and keep moving, and you’re fine.”
