Air Quality Plummets to ‘Very Unhealthy’ Levels in Valley Today

Air quality is 'very unhealthy' in parts of the Valley today

Air quality values over 200 denote unhealthy conditions for all members of the public.

PHOENIX — Windy conditions have stirred up dust across the Valley, negatively impacting air quality. Residents are being urged to stay informed as many areas now fall within the “very unhealthy” and “unhealthy” ranges.

Recent data from the Maricopa County Air Quality Map highlights significant pollution levels, particularly in parts of Scottsdale, Phoenix, and Fountain Hills. In contrast, a few areas of Mesa reported “good” air quality levels.

According to the county guidelines, pollutant levels under 100 are typically seen as acceptable. However, the air quality indices exceeding 200 indicate hazardous conditions.

In response to these findings, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has issued a high pollution advisory affecting July 1 and July 2. Residents are advised to refrain from using wood-burning stoves, fireplaces, and outdoor fire pits during this period.

This morning, hazy skies persisted over the Phoenix metro area. With diminishing winds, the dust is expected to linger throughout the morning hours. Meteorological observations suggest limited options for dispersing this particulated haze.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality cautioned residents about increased pollution levels due to windblown dust and urged the public to limit outdoor activities when possible.

For more detailed information, Maricopa County has made its air quality map accessible online, allowing residents to monitor air conditions in real-time.
