The Chandler Fire Department responded promptly to the Hamilton Aquatic Center on Sunday evening following reports of a drowning incident.
CHANDLER, Ariz. — Tragically, a child has died after drowning at the Hamilton Aquatic Center. Authorities reported that firefighters arrived on the scene shortly after the alarm was raised.
According to the Chandler Police Department, lifeguards had already pulled a 4-year-old boy from the pool by the time firefighters arrived. The child was rushed to Chandler Regional Hospital in critical condition but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
As of now, authorities have not disclosed the circumstances leading up to the incident or the identity of the child involved. Further details are currently not available.
Drowning remains a serious concern for young children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identifies it as the leading cause of death for kids aged 1-4, following birth defects. On average, three children drown each day in the United States.
In light of this tragedy, parents and guardians are encouraged to adopt preventative measures to safeguard children around water:
Firstly, learning life-saving skills such as swimming basics and CPR is essential. It prepares individuals to handle emergencies effectively.
Additionally, installing a four-sided isolation fence around backyard pools, equipped with self-closing and self-latching gates, can significantly reduce access when children should not be swimming.
Wearing life jackets is crucial, especially for children near natural water bodies or pools. Even competent swimmers can benefit from using them.
Lastly, vigilant supervision is key. Adults should closely monitor children in or near water, steering clear of distractions like phone calls or reading during these critical moments.
Authorities have stated that updates on this incident will follow as more information becomes available.
