Crews rescue 11 hikers from South Mountain's Holbert Trail after heat-related issues

PHOENIX — A family of 11, including five adults and six children, was rescued from Holbert Trail at South Mountain on Sunday afternoon after experiencing heat-related issues, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

The group began their hike at around 10 a.m. and called for help shortly after noon when several members started suffering from heat exhaustion, making it impossible to go further. The call for assistance alerted emergency responders to their location, which is situated near 7th Street south of Dobbins Road.

Fire crews employed “rapid cooling” techniques to treat the hikers upon their arrival. Rescuers used a specialized basket to transport two children, ages nine and eleven, safely back to the base of the mountain.

Remarkably, the family declined transportation to the hospital after receiving care.

Holbert Trail is one of the trails closed during extreme heat days, highlighting an increased risk for hikers. Authorities had posted multiple signs indicating the closure, yet the family chose to proceed despite the warnings.

Forecasts predict near-record temperatures for the upcoming days, with highs likely to exceed 110°F across the lower desert areas and peaking around 115°F in many regions on Monday. Extreme Heat Warnings have been issued, particularly for Monday, prompting local officials to remind residents of the dangers associated with outdoor activities in such conditions.

Further updates will be provided as details develop.
