Over 2,000 Violations Uncovered in Just Two Weeks of Tempe’s Photo Enforcement Program

Tempe Police reported a significant uptick in dangerous driving citations following the launch of a photo enforcement program. In just two weeks, over 2,200 citations for speeding and running red lights were issued.
The initiative, introduced in April, involves the installation of cameras at 14 intersections across Tempe. Authorities mentioned that nearly 8,000 additional alleged violations are currently under review, which could potentially elevate the total citations close to 10,000.
Citations carry a hefty fine of $250, and offenders caught speeding while running a red light could face two citations. Serious offenders may even confront criminal charges for excessive speeding.
Tempe Police emphasized that the high volume of citations highlights the pressing need for such enforcement measures to enhance road safety. The program includes 14 fixed traffic cameras and four mobile units in areas known for high incidences of speeding and severe accidents.
Mayor Corey Woods remarked on the program’s efficacy, noting that similar initiatives have successfully reduced crashes globally. For instance, Scottsdale observed a remarkable 65% reduction in speed-related crashes after implementing its own photo enforcement program.
