The National Weather Service recently issued its first extreme heat warning for Maricopa, advising residents to rethink their morning coffee routines. With temperatures consistently soaring into the triple digits, safety reminders are critical.

The NWS’s Las Vegas office circulated a heat safety checklist emphasizing hydration and lightweight clothing. Among the numerous tips, a surprising suggestion was to avoid caffeinated drinks altogether, urging coffee enthusiasts to reconsider their daily brews.

In response, local residents shared their thoughts on whether they would forgo their morning caffeine to stay hydrated. “Not as long as I have access to potable water,” remarked Colette Heim from Senita. She confirmed her commitment to her two cups of coffee each morning.

At Dutch Bros on John Wayne Parkway, customers awaited their drinks during “Can Cozy” day. Despite the heat, many were reluctant to abandon their favorite beverages. Sharon Windsmith, a Maricopa visitor, stated, “Life is too short. I’ll go in the pool if I’m too hot.”

Lindsay Herndon, new to Arizona, voiced her struggle with the heat: “It isn’t so unbearable that I’d give up caffeine.” This sentiment echoed among the crowd as they braved the heat for their desired drinks.

Forecasts predict high temperatures between 109 and 113 degrees for the week ahead, with extreme heat warnings issued through July 3. This intense heat underscores the importance of staying cool and the need for mindful hydration.

According to the Mayo Clinic, coffee acts as a diuretic, meaning it increases urination. To significantly affect fluid levels, one would need to consume around 30 ounces of coffee, equivalent to about 400 mg of caffeine. While caffeinated beverages contribute to daily fluid intake, water remains the best option for staying hydrated in extreme heat.

In essence, enjoy that iced latte, but don’t forget to follow it up with a glass of water.
