ADOT five-year plan
Letter to the Editor: An Unforgettable Experience You Simply Can’t Miss

Dozens of residents from Maricopa and Payson gathered at the Payson Town Hall on June 20, 2025, for an Arizona State Transportation Board meeting that resulted in the approval of funding for State Routes 347 and 260. This meeting marked a significant step in a continued push for infrastructure improvements in the region.
Attendees witnessed an exemplary display of civic engagement. Maricopa officials arrived with determination, prepared to advocate for State Route 347’s inclusion on the Arizona Department of Transportation’s (ADOT) five-year plan. The strategic discussions emphasized that for Route 347 to advance, other projects might need reconsideration.
During the meeting, ADOT Board Member Jenny Howard made a poignant analogy, likening the situation to a family faced with limited food resources, underscoring the difficult decisions that lie ahead in allocating state funding.
As the gathering unfolded, tensions surfaced. A resident confronted Maricopa’s Mayor Nancy Smith, expressing concerns about funding and fairness. Her composed response was a testament to effective leadership, showcasing her dedication to dialogue and community cohesion. The atmosphere shifted when Christian Price, former Mayor, joined the conversation, fostering understanding through shared experiences.
Throughout the meeting, numerous local voices contributed to the discussions, but it was the youth from the Be Awesome Youth Coalition who particularly resonated with the audience. Their heartfelt accounts of navigating hazards on local roads were impactful, prompting a pause even from Chair Jenn Daniels, who recognized their courage and contributions.
The presence of a representative for a competing project highlighted a moment of unexpected unity. Rather than engage in conflict, he acknowledged the fervor of Route 347’s supporters. This exchange illustrated that despite competing interests, both communities faced similar challenges and aspirations.
In a remarkable turn of events, the board approved both Route 347 and the alternative project, creating a pathway for progress. Attendees celebrated a newfound common ground, illustrating the power of empathy as they navigated a complex dialogue.
While challenges remain, the spirit of perseverance in Maricopa prevails. Advocacy and active participation in community discussions have affirmed the importance of engagement in shaping local infrastructure. This meeting serves as a vital reminder of the collective strength inherent in community involvement.
Sincerely,
Quinn Konold, Maricopa resident, Communications and Community Enrichment Director for the City of Maricopa
