USAF Veteran from Lakes Launches VA Claims Business Amid D.C. Uncertainty and Local Demand

U.S. Air Force veteran and retired VA services representative Paul Smith is launching a small business aimed at assisting fellow veterans in securing the benefits they’re entitled to.
Recognizing an urgent need for support amidst layoffs at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Smith founded DD214 VA Claims. His goal is to help veterans in Pinal County navigate the complex benefits system.
Smith emphasized the importance of serving this community, saying, “There’s a camaraderie that exists. Many veterans are unaware of what entitlements they qualify for.”
With nearly 15 years of experience with the VA, Smith’s new venture will provide guidance on benefits acquisition. An information session is scheduled for July 10 at 6 p.m. at Native Grill & Wings, located on John Wayne Parkway.
His initiative comes at a challenging time, as the VA plans to cut over 80,000 jobs nationwide. Smith expressed concerns about third-party companies taking advantage of veterans during this period of uncertainty.
“Some have tarnished reputations for exploiting veterans,” he remarked. “They may promote no startup fees but impose hefty charges for services.”
Smith, who also runs Bubba Brewing Company in memory of his late son, intends to offer his services for a flat fee of $214. He assures veterans of his commitment throughout the application process.
“I don’t seek any backpay. This fee covers my time in helping them secure lasting benefits,” Smith said, reinforcing his dedication to the veteran community.
Those interested in attending the info session are encouraged to RSVP by July 9 by calling 602-790-2411.
