Batter up: Summer Softball season begins

The Sedona Parks and Recreation Department is set to launch its adult softball league on Thursday, June 12. Games will take place every Thursday night from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., promising an engaging atmosphere for local sports enthusiasts.

Carmen Brashier, the Athletics and Aquatics Supervisor, emphasized the league’s grassroots character. “There’s a little bit of competition, but it’s definitely Parks and Rec-based,” she stated. The focus remains on enjoyment rather than cutthroat competition. Brashier highlighted the camaraderie among players, making Thursday nights a community celebration.

This season, each of the four registered teams—the Dirty Rats, Quit Pitching, Sedona Jeep Tours, and Sun Catchers—will compete in eight regular-season games. Brashier plans to implement a double-elimination format, contingent upon team registrations, to maximize playtime. Last year’s championship was clinched by Rokzoo.

Umpire Jason Metzger reflected on the league’s competitive spirit, citing Rokzoo’s championship in 2024 and A Day in the West’s victory in 2023. He emphasized the joy of watching families play together and encouraged women to participate, noting their significant contributions to the co-ed league.

Parking on game nights may be limited, prompting Brashier to suggest alternative locations. Spectators and players can use the Hub, the recreational room on the west side of the park, or the West Sedona School parking lot. She also mentioned that the concession stand will remain unstaffed and reminded attendees that pets must be leashed.

The game schedule is expected to be available on the department’s website later this week. Brashier confirmed they have sufficient volunteers and staff. Many lifeguards will serve as scorekeepers, alongside returning umpires Jason and Justin, while the maintenance crew will ensure field readiness.

Individuals interested in joining a team this season can reach out to Brashier at (928) 282-7098 or via email at cbrashier@sedonaaz.gov. Teams have the option to add players to their rosters, with a cap of 24, until the postseason’s onset, which typically occurs at the end of August.
