In a dramatic turn of events, federal law enforcement officials forcibly removed U.S. Senator Alex Padilla during a press conference in Los Angeles on Thursday. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem oversaw the incident amid ongoing protests against the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

The confrontation, which involved agents, including one with an FBI jacket, signifies a notable escalation in tensions following President Donald Trump’s deployment of 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to the city. This decision came amidst growing protests linked to intensified immigration raids by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Before Padilla was taken away, Secretary Noem asserted that the Trump administration would persist in its immigration enforcement efforts. “We are not going away,” she stated emphatically, criticizing local leadership for what she described as burdensome policies.

Senator Padilla, who has held office since 2021 following an appointment and subsequent election in 2022, attempted to pose a question to Noem when he was confronted by multiple federal officers. “Hands off,” he exclaimed as he was forcibly subdued.

The Department of Homeland Security later clarified on social media that officers had mistakenly perceived Padilla as a threat and acted accordingly. Following the press conference, Noem and Padilla reportedly engaged in a brief meeting lasting around 15 minutes, although Padilla’s office did not provide immediate comment.

Padilla’s team explained that the Senator was in Los Angeles for congressional oversight of federal operations in California. His office noted that Padilla was present to receive a briefing and to listen to Noem’s remarks when the incident occurred.

The confrontation has attracted sharp criticism from various political figures, including members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer. Schumer voiced his outrage on social media, describing the treatment of Padilla as disturbing and demanding answers regarding the incident.

On the Senate floor, Schumer characterized the event as reminiscent of totalitarianism and called for a comprehensive investigation to ensure such actions are not repeated.

After the incident, Padilla made brief remarks to The Associated Press, emphasizing the implications of such behavior from the administration towards a U.S. Senator. He noted that if this is how officials respond to a senator, one can only imagine the treatment faced by everyday workers in the Los Angeles community.
