Montenegro Demands Override Following Hobbs’ Veto of Antisemitism Education Legislation

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs is under fire for her recent veto of the Antisemitism in Education Act, prompting a call for a veto override by House Speaker Steve Montenegro. Rep. Michael Way (R-LD15) condemned the veto as “the most disgraceful” of Hobbs’ tenure. The bill, known as HB 2867, was approved by the legislature on June 4. It aimed to prohibit educators from promoting antisemitism or requiring students to support antisemitic views for academic credit, and it sought to ban public funds from being used for such instruction.
Sponsored by Way, the legislation was expected to gain Hobbs’ support. He argued, “This should be an easy decision for the governor. The Legislature has done its job. Now it’s up to the governor.” However, Hobbs rejected the bill, citing a letter from Lori Shepherd of The Tucson Jewish Museum & Holocaust Center, which emphasized the importance of fostering critical discussions about the Holocaust and its contemporary ramifications.
Hobbs criticized the bill as an attack on educators, asserting that it would expose teachers and staff to personal liability and legal threats. She contended that it unfairly targeted public school teachers while exempting those in private institutions. Furthermore, she framed the veto as a defense of the integrity of Arizona’s public education system.
Way responded on social media, voicing his disappointment: “Instead of standing with Jewish students and faculty, she sided with those who promote hate and hostility on campus.” He reaffirmed his commitment to combating antisemitism, stating that Hobbs’ veto effectively protects such ideologies.
Montenegro echoed this sentiment in a post, labeling the veto as misguided and vowing to pursue an override before the session concludes. He stated, “This veto is beyond the pale, and the House WILL proceed with a veto override.” Both leaders emphasize the need for legislative action to safeguard educational environments from antisemitic influences.
