Apache Junction officer dies after being shot in the line of duty

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. — Officer Gabriel Facio, critically injured in a shooting on Monday, succumbed to his wounds on Sunday, marking a tragic loss for the local community. Facio, who had served with the Apache Junction Police Department for three years, was hailed as the “heartbeat” of the department.

The incident occurred while responding to a call regarding a man with a weapon. Officers arrived to find 37-year-old Roger Nunez, who reportedly exited his vehicle brandishing a firearm. During the confrontation, both the officer and Nunez were shot and transported to a local hospital.

Facio leaves behind a wife and two children, as the community rallies to support his family. A GoFundMe page has been established to assist them during this difficult time.

Chief Michael Pooley expressed profound sorrow in a statement. “It is with a broken heart I inform you of the passing of Officer Gabriel Facio today at 1:08 pm,” he said. Pooley emphasized that Officer Facio was not only a dedicated police officer but also a cherished family man whose service would not be forgotten.

Facio’s ordeal highlighted his remarkable strength, as he fought for his life surrounded by loved ones. However, the violence inflicted during a senseless act ultimately proved too severe. Chief Pooley pledged that the department would honor Facio’s memory through continued service with integrity and compassion.

Pinal County Attorney Brad Miller also issued a statement, expressing condolences and reaffirming a commitment to justice. “This senseless act has shaken us to our core,” he remarked. Miller promised that the individual responsible will be held accountable, emphasizing the importance of maintaining public safety and trust in law enforcement.

The Apache Junction Police Department has announced plans for a fundraiser to further assist Officer Facio’s family. The grief felt by the community is palpable, as residents unite in remembrance of a dedicated officer who paid the ultimate price in service of others.
