Tesla proposes Maricopa’s first superchargers amid Musk, Trump feud

Tesla has submitted plans to establish Maricopa’s inaugural electric vehicle supercharging station along the city’s main strip. The proposed site, located at 20797 N. John Wayne Parkway, will house 16 high-speed charging stalls within the Fry’s Marketplace parking lot.

This facility will operate 24 hours a day, featuring essential electrical equipment, lighting, and waste bins. The project narrative was presented on May 30 and is currently under review by city officials, prepared by Dewberry Engineers, who emphasized that the supercharger network enhances mobility for EV owners.

If granted approval, the station would become the largest public charging facility in Maricopa and one of the most significant in Pinal County, catering to local EV drivers and commuters along State Route 347. As of now, Maricopa boasts a record of over 800 registered electric vehicles, highlighting a growing demand for charging infrastructure.

The 12-acre property belongs to Smith’s Food and Drug Centers, a subsidiary of Kroger. Tesla will manage the station with its internal service team. The company cited a pressing need for fast-charging solutions as current infrastructure in Maricopa is inadequate, especially during peak times like weekends and holidays.

Interestingly, the new supercharger site won’t be exclusive to electric vehicles. Tesla plans to allow all charging spaces for non-EV vehicle parking, with no restrictions indicated in the submitted documents. This strategy could attract a wider range of drivers, complementing the company’s initiative of opening its supercharger network to various automakers.

Notably, this is Tesla’s second proposal for a charging location in Maricopa. An earlier plan for a 12-stall station along SR 347 has not moved forward in the city’s design review process.

As EV ownership in Maricopa continues to rise, the existing charging options lag behind, with the nearest fast chargers located miles away in Casa Grande and Chandler. Establishing this supercharging station would significantly enhance local charging accessibility.

Furthermore, the project aligns with ongoing efforts to expand the region’s renewable energy resources. The newly operational Box Canyon Solar Project, located east of the city, began supplying power to the Maricopa grid recently.

The proposal comes amidst broader market dynamics affecting Tesla’s growth. CEO Elon Musk recently spoke with the White House regarding electric vehicle tax policies, following tensions that had previously impacted the company’s stock performance.

The Maricopa supercharging station will be privately funded and constructed by Tesla; however, it awaits final approvals and permits from the city before breaking ground. A timeline for the project has yet to be announced.
