Defeat is a state of mind

Have you considered how your skill level impacts your decisions in firearms training?
As a firearms instructor, my focus centers on self-defense. The techniques I teach are specifically designed to aid individuals in critical self-defense situations.
Every drill practiced serves a purpose, simulating scenarios one might encounter when utilizing a firearm for protection. Understanding various conditions is crucial; practicing different techniques helps convert them into second nature responses, allowing for quicker, instinctive reactions.
A significant aspect of my training involves timing. Using a shot timer, I meticulously record each drill’s speed, enabling participants to gauge their performance during intermediate and advanced courses.
Knowing your average speed for specific drills is essential. For instance, drawing your firearm from a concealed position and firing two rounds is fundamental. This drill, critical for everyday concealed carriers, informs decision-making in life-threatening encounters.
I have observed numerous incidents where individuals draw their weapon too soon, ultimately losing the confrontation. Understanding one’s draw speed is not just a skill; it’s vital for survival.
While there may be moments requiring immediate action, consistent training cultivates both muscle memory and awareness of your operational speed. To be effective, you must outpace your opponent, and preparation ensures you can respond swiftly.
The adage “smooth is fast” applies here. Mastery of the drills through proper technique precedes speed. Prioritizing speed too early leads to errors and compromised performance.
Firearm skills diminish without regular practice. Maintaining proficiency does not demand excessive rounds; rather, it requires ongoing training. Engaging in dry fire exercises, using dummy rounds, is an excellent way to refine essential manipulations.
Understanding your skill level is paramount. Beginners should seek training to avoid developing bad habits, which can be challenging to correct. Your skill level must inform every decision you make.
NEVER STOP TRAINING!

“Preparation and situational awareness are crucial,” states Oz Johnson. “Our goal is to instill a tactical mindset in our students—to think critically about their next actions.”
Carrying a Concealed Weapon involves possessing a firearm in public without it being visible, either on one’s person or nearby. “Should you need to draw your weapon in self-defense, clarity on your next steps is vital,” adds Karin Johnson. “Making informed decisions is key.”
