APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. — A police officer was critically injured following an exchange of gunfire with a suspect on Monday. The incident occurred near Ironwood Drive and Elliot Road.

Authorities reported that the officer, identified as Officer Gabriel Facio, was shot in the face during the confrontation. He has been with the Apache Junction Police Department for three years and is described as a vital member of the team.

The suspect, 37-year-old Robert Nunez, is in custody and suffering from “life-threatening” injuries. Both individuals were transported to the hospital after the shooting.

According to police, the incident began with a call reporting a man with a weapon. Officers located Nunez, who exited his vehicle armed. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots followed by commands from officers.

“We are holding onto hope and standing beside him and his family during this incredibly difficult time,” the department stated in a Facebook post.
