Thousands spend Memorial Day at Lake Pleasant celebrating, honoring and remembering

Thousands flocked to Lake Pleasant this Memorial Day weekend, marking one of the busiest periods of the year for the park.

MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. — Visitors gathered at Lake Pleasant on Monday to partake in various activities under the sun. For many families, this day serves a deeper purpose—commemorating the sacrifices of loved ones who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Attendees engaged in boating, kayaking, and swimming, making memories with friends and pets alike. “Just joy, happiness, gratitude,” expressed Victor Franco amid the festivities.

Ruby Medina arrived early, securing a prime spot along the shore. “We got some jet skis and sandwiches,” she reported, clearly enjoying the day with her family.

With over a million visitors in the past year, Lake Pleasant remains the most visited park in Maricopa County. Officials anticipated a bustling Memorial Day weekend, with many seeking relief from the heat.

Despite the typical hustle and bustle, Monday was manageable. Franco noted, “There are a lot of people, but there’s enough room for all of us. We’re just trying to relax before work tomorrow.”

Reflecting on the occasion, park-goer Jesus shared his personal tribute to family members who served. “I’m honoring them even though they’re not here,” he said.

Others, like Ruby, also paused to remember. “I’m thinking about my nephew who served,” she remarked, acknowledging both gratitude and remembrance.

Participants expressed heartfelt appreciation for the sacrifices made by those in the military. Franco summarized, “Be grateful for the time you have with your family. It’s Memorial Day—take a moment to think about those who didn’t make it back.” This sentiment resonated throughout the day as visitors honored their loved ones while making new memories.
