Man Arrested for Death Threats Against Sister-in-Law in Villages, Police Confirm

Maricopa Police Department apprehended 29-year-old Devante R. Criswell on May 18, 2025, following a disturbing incident involving threats made against his sister-in-law. This arrest came just two days after another local man allegedly shot his sister-in-law in the face.
Police responded to reports of a possible stabbing at a residence on Caven Drive shortly after 10 p.m., as detailed in a probable cause statement obtained by InMaricopa. Upon arrival, officers determined no stabbing had occurred but discovered a severe verbal altercation had escalated into death threats at knifepoint.
The conflict reportedly stemmed from a disagreement in the kitchen. Allegedly intoxicated, Criswell felt disrespected by his sister-in-law. In an effort to de-escalate the situation, she attempted to embrace him, only for Criswell to brandish a knife and threaten her life.
Criswell’s brother intervened, physically subduing him after witnessing his aggressive behavior. However, in a later statement, the brother acknowledged Criswell’s knife-wielding actions, according to police reports.
The confrontation ultimately moved outside, where officers discovered the knife on the ground. Criswell sustained injuries to his lip and nose during the altercation with his brother, indicating the violence of the encounter.
During questioning, Criswell admitted to brandishing the knife but stated he would “never kill anyone in his family.” Notably, several children and other family members were present at the home during the incident.
Criswell has been booked into the Pinal County jail, facing charges of aggravated assault and disorderly conduct. If convicted, he could serve up to five and a half years in prison.
Recently, another incident involving assault and disorderly conduct also made headlines, where a woman’s attempt to offer a hug was met with violence.
