Greer Fire Update: 18K Acres Engulfed as Governor Declares State of Emergency

The Greer Fire, currently raging near Greer, Arizona, has consumed over 18,617 acres as of Saturday morning with no containment achieved. Fire crews have been battling this blaze since May 13.

In response to the escalating situation, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs declared a state of emergency on May 17, allocating $200,000 from the Governor’s Emergency Fund to support firefighting efforts. Local authorities have mandated evacuation orders for Greer, Northwoods, South Fork, and additional areas south of State Route 260.

As evacuations continue, more than 519 personnel are engaged in fighting the fire, with support measures being developed for homes in Eagar. Fire officials stated that precautions are underway to protect structures in the vicinity.

While the fire spread east of Highway 261 has been limited, concerns persist regarding flames nearing critical infrastructure. Fire officials reported that containment lines on the west side near Greer are holding steady, allowing teams to cool off remaining hot spots.

Crews are conducting damage assessments and ensuring residents in high-risk areas remain safe. Consequently, areas are designated under various evacuation statuses: “GO” orders for immediate evacuation, “SET” orders for preparedness, and “READY” statuses prompting residents to stay alert.

The Red Cross has established shelters for displaced residents at Saint Johns High School and the Apache County Fairgrounds. The Town of Eagar has declared its own state of emergency, restricting outdoor activities to reduce fire risks.

State Route 260 and portions of SR 261 have been closed due to the fire’s proximity, complicating evacuation routes. Despite the challenges posed by strong winds and rugged terrain, ground crews remain steadfast in their efforts.

As the fire continues to threaten communities, locals are urged to remain vigilant. Residents are advised to prepare emergency kits containing essential items, ensuring their safety amid ongoing wildfire activity throughout Arizona.
