Phoenix Zoo Grieves the Loss of Beloved Mountain Lion, Mystic

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Zoo is deeply saddened by the loss of Mystic, an 18-year-old mountain lion, who was humanely euthanized this week due to advanced renal failure.
Mystic’s decline in health came after years of being a beloved resident of the zoo, where she lived alongside her sister, Sierra, who passed away from similar health complications last February. Both sisters had been under the care of the zoo’s dedicated staff since 2007.
The zoo expressed its appreciation for the time spent with Mystic, acknowledging her secretive yet gentle nature that endeared her to the caregivers. “We feel fortunate to have witnessed her exploring the space and welcoming guests to the newly opened Big Cats of Arizona habitat,” the zoo stated.
Although the zoo will temporarily be without mountain lions, new life is on the horizon. Two mountain lion cubs, Fern and Thistle, are set to arrive from Oakland Zoo later this summer, ensuring that visitors will soon have the opportunity to engage with these magnificent creatures once again.
