Greer Fire latest updates | 6,400 acres burned, no containment reported

GREER, Ariz. — Fire crews are battling the Greer Fire, which has consumed over 6,400 acres since erupting on May 13. The Phoenix Fire Department is deploying units to assist with wildfire suppression efforts.

Evacuations are underway across Greer, Northwoods, and South Fork. Residents in Eagar’s west side and areas east of South Fork are on “SET” status, indicating they should prepare for potential evacuation.

Apache County Emergency Management has ordered evacuations for those south of Highway 260 and west of River Road. The fire’s movement is currently north-northeast towards South Fork, stalling near Coon Canyon as crews take measures to prevent its spread.

As of Wednesday afternoon, containment remains at 0%, with over 200 personnel engaged in firefighting operations. Gusty winds exceeding 65 miles per hour have hampered the use of heavy aerial equipment, complicating efforts.

Officials report four structures have been destroyed but, thankfully, no injuries have been recorded. Multiple agencies, including local fire departments and Arizona Forestry, are collaborating to manage the situation.

The Greer Fire District expressed gratitude to the emergency responders and the community. The declaration of a state of emergency by Springerville and Eagar enforces a ban on outdoor burning and smoking until further notice.

Evacuation shelters have been established at Saint Johns High School and the Apache County Fairgrounds. Residents in need of animal accommodations are directed to the Round Valley Rodeo Grounds or the Alpine Community Center.

State Route 260 is closed in both directions between mileposts 385 and 393 due to the fire, and schools in the Round Valley School District are operating under a “Digital Learning Day” to keep students safe.

Authorities are continuing to advise residents in fire-prone areas to maintain emergency supply kits. These should include essentials like water, non-perishable food, a first-aid kit, important documents, and other supplies to ensure preparedness.
