Venmo outage leaves people unable to use app


SAN FRANCISCO — A significant outage affected the mobile payment app Venmo on Thursday evening, disrupting services for many users.

Reports began surfacing around 5 p.m. PT, as indicated by DownDetector. The peak of the incident saw over 14,000 outage reports filed.

Users attempting to access the app encountered an error message stating, “There was an error. Something didn’t work, please try again.” Meanwhile, those on the desktop version faced a full-page privacy error, warning that “attackers might be trying to steal your information from venmo.com.” This was later followed by a “504 Gateway Time-out” message.

Frustrations escalated on social media, as many users expressed concerns about being unable to complete rent payments, with deadlines approaching on the first of the month.

As of now, Venmo has yet to issue a public statement regarding the outage.
