Embracing a new look, new era for Phoenix Mercury

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Mercury are entering a new chapter without legends Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner. This marks the first training camp in 20 years devoid of both players, as Taurasi retires and Griner transfers to the Atlanta Dream.

Head coach Nate Tibbetts faces the challenge of forging team chemistry and establishing a new identity amidst significant roster changes. His mission aims to return the storied franchise to championship form.

Alyssa Thomas, now in her first season with the Mercury after a tenure with the Connecticut Sun, is eager to contribute. Winning an Olympic gold alongside Kahleah Copper last summer has solidified their partnership as the franchise’s new leaders.

“Defense is going to be huge for us,” Thomas stated. “I take pride in it and want to be among the top defensive teams this season.”

Copper, the lone returning starter from last year’s lineup, is stepping up as a leader. Having worked with Tibbetts last season, she aims to foster a strong defensive culture. “It’s crucial for me to set the tone,” she said.

Copper, a 2021 WNBA champion with the Chicago Sky, actively recruited free agents to join the Mercury, focusing on the team’s successful history. Tibbetts expressed pride in her growth as a player and leader.

“It’s hard to lead when legends like Taurasi and Griner are around,” Tibbetts noted. “But Copper is ready to embrace this opportunity, and we’re excited about her development.”

The new Big Three also includes forward Satou Sabally, who arrives from Dallas after being the No. 2 pick in the 2020 draft. Eager to rise to high expectations, she expressed enthusiasm for joining the Mercury, an organization that introduced her to women’s basketball.

“I thrive in high-pressure environments,” Sabally remarked. “Every day, I’m grateful to be part of this franchise.”

The Mercury will kick off their preseason against the Las Vegas Aces on May 6, followed by a home opener against the Seattle Storm on May 17.
