Stronghold Fire Surges to 2,138 Acres, Now Only 22% Controlled

COCHISE COUNTY, Ariz. — The Stronghold Fire, near Sunsites-Pearce in Cochise County, has expanded to over 2,138 acres and is currently 22% contained, according to the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management.
Evacuations have been ordered for residents west of Cochise Stronghold Road and south of Ironwood Road, affecting approximately 25 homes. The sheriff’s office urges affected residents to evacuate immediately, taking essential items such as medications and important documents.
Additionally, residents north of Middle March Road and south of West Eastland Street have entered “SET” status, signifying they should prepare for potential evacuation.
As of Tuesday, firefighting crews have made progress on the northeastern side of the blaze by mopping up hotspots and securing fire lines. Air support, including single engine and large air tankers, is crucial as it aids in combating the fire’s spread from the ground level.
Currently, around 240 personnel are engaged in firefighting operations, comprising four hotshot crews, additional Type 2 hand crews, and multiple fire engines and water tenders.
On Monday, strong winds exacerbated the fire’s behavior, leading to its spread into the Dragoon Mountains and the Coronado National Forest. One structure has been lost, and ongoing weather changes are challenging firefighting efforts.
Residents are reminded of the “Ready, Set, Go” evacuation protocol. Those designated in “READY” status should be prepared for emergencies, while “SET” indicates a recommendation to evacuate voluntarily. A “GO” alert necessitates immediate evacuation.
The cause of the Stronghold Fire, which ignited around 11:30 a.m. on Monday, is still under investigation. For ongoing updates, residents should stay vigilant and consult official channels.
