Glendale Mayor Announces Support For Propositions In May Special Election

By Matthew Holloway |

Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers is throwing his support behind two key ballot propositions slated for the special election on May 20. These propositions, Props 401 and 402, aim to endorse the Glendale City Council’s approval for phased development of the VAI Resort near State Farm Stadium off Loop 101.

According to Weiers, who enjoys unanimous backing from the council, the VAI Resort is a crucial step for the city’s future. In a statement, he declared, “This development will strengthen our economy, provide thousands of jobs, and increase city revenues to improve police, fire, infrastructure, and more.” He urged residents to vote in favor of the propositions, emphasizing that zoning amendments are essential for the project’s success. “It is inappropriate to have an out-of-state union parachuting into our city to try to determine our future,” he stated.

The VAI Resort has faced challenges from a California-based special interest group. This group previously encountered a defeat with the November election of Proposition 499, which aimed to implement a $20 per hour minimum wage for hotel and event center workers in Glendale. The proposed measure also sought to create a city department dedicated to enforcing wage and labor laws.

Weiers pointed out that the same organization behind Prop 499, Worker Power, has mobilized activists against the new propositions. This group is affiliated with the labor union UniteHere and has also been involved in opposing pro-immigration enforcement legislation in Arizona.

Grant Fisher, Campaign Chairman for Props 401 and 402, praised Mayor Weiers’ support, stating, “There has been no greater champion for Glendale’s economic health than Mayor Weiers.” Fisher expressed optimism about the potential economic growth, stating that the project could bring thousands of jobs and significantly boost local economic activity.

Props 401 and 402 are primarily administrative. Proposition 401 endorses the general plan amendment for the VAI Resort’s development, while Proposition 402 confirms the zoning approval.

In his message to voters, Weiers urged participation, saying, “Supporting this initiative means supporting a brighter, more prosperous future for Glendale. Let’s make the right choice. Please vote YES on Propositions 401 and 402 on your mail-in ballot by May 13.”
