Flagg, Broome, Clayton are among the Final Four players to watch in a showdown between No. 1 seeds

SAN ANTONIO — This year’s NCAA Final Four features a familiar landscape. For only the second time since the inception of seeding in 1979, all four teams competing for the championship are No. 1 seeds. The absence of mid-major or lower-seeded teams sets the stage for a high-stakes battle among the elite.

The matchups include an SEC showdown between Florida and Auburn, alongside a key clash of titans as Duke faces Houston. This Final Four is a testament to the dominance of major conferences, which claimed a significant portion of the tournament’s early spots and have outperformed others throughout the rounds.

The last occurrence of all four No. 1 seeds reaching this stage was in 2008, featuring Memphis from Conference USA. This year’s tournament, however, is entirely composed of powerhouse programs, with the Big Ten still seeking its first national title since 2000.

As the games approach, attention turns to standout players from each team. For Auburn, Johni Broome, an AP All-American, has made headlines with his impressive stats, averaging 18 points and nearly 11 rebounds per game. Despite hitting his elbow during a victory against Michigan State, he returned to the court, indicating potential for a strong performance in the Final Four.

On the other hand, Tahaad Pettiford has also shown promise. While NBA scouts may raise questions about his overall performance throughout the season, his recent tournament average of 17.2 points could elevate his draft stock significantly.

Duke’s Cooper Flagg, equally noteworthy, displayed flashes of brilliance during the tournament, including a 30-point game against BYU. However, his performance against Alabama highlighted the pressure of high-stakes play. Teammate Khaman Maluach, standing at 7-foot-2, has proven to be a formidable presence in the paint, converting 12 of 15 shots during the Sweet 16 weekend.

Florida’s Walter Clayton Jr. has emerged as a clutch player, clinching crucial three-pointers in significant moments. His coach praised him, asserting Clayton is one of the best players to have in pressure situations. Will Richard, despite moments of inconsistency, has the potential to make a game-changing impact.

For Houston, Joseph Tugler’s defensive prowess might be vital against the formidable offensive threats they will face. Even if he averages only 5.5 points, his defensive skills can alter the game’s dynamics. Leading scorer L.J. Cryer, averaging 15.2 points, will need to elevate his game for Houston to contend for the title.

With monumental matchups and top talent slated for a showdown, the anticipation builds for this historic Final Four in San Antonio.
