Alma Farrell, a pivotal figure in Maricopa’s history, has passed away at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy that deeply resonates within the community.
Farrell, a former school superintendent and owner of the Headquarters restaurant, significantly impacted many lives throughout her career. Tributes poured in from city leaders who recognized her contributions and unwavering dedication to Maricopa.
Dr. Tracey Lopeman, the current superintendent of the Maricopa Unified School District, praised Farrell for her trailblazing role as a female leader. “She made space for us to follow her,” Dr. Lopeman noted, highlighting Farrell’s vision and compassion. Her commitment to the community was clear in every initiative she supported, serving as a model for future leaders.
Patti Coutré, a member of the MUSD Governing Board, reflected on their friendship, which began when she moved to Maricopa in 2005. “Alma was my inspiration and support in becoming a board member,” Coutré said, remembering her friend’s faith and commitment to the school district. The Desert Sunrise High School community also expressed its sorrow at losing Farrell, who continued to support MUSD even after her retirement. “We were honored to have her at our groundbreaking in 2021,” the school remarked, acknowledging her enduring legacy in education and mentorship.
