Homelessness in Mohave County keeps growing, along with funding to fight it

Arizona has invested billions to tackle homelessness, allocating substantial funds to Mohave County. Despite these efforts, the homeless population has surged by 35% since 2019, reflecting a troubling trend statewide and locally.

Michael Smith, Director of Community Services in Mohave County, described the funding as “historic.” In 2023 alone, Arizona approved $150 million for the Housing Trust Fund, marking the largest commitment in the state’s history. Another $60 million was designated for a new Homeless Shelter and Services Fund, aimed at providing essential support.

This substantial funding underscores the urgency of addressing homelessness, yet the challenges remain daunting. Community advocates express concern about sustaining these initiatives amidst rising demands. As local agencies grapple with increased need, the efficacy of these financial measures remains to be seen.

Plans to utilize the new funding effectively are underway, with hopes of decreasing the growing number of individuals living without stable housing. The overall strategy seeks not only to provide immediate assistance but also to foster long-term housing solutions.

As Arizona continues to confront this pressing issue, community leaders emphasize the importance of collaboration and innovation in addressing homelessness. The future will depend on how effectively these resources are mobilized and whether they can lead to meaningful change.
